Few times in the world are as memorable as being up late all night with close friends outside in the tree house that your friends or family constructed in the course of a many months. In several cases they should not require many expensive materials or lots of space. In truth, custom tree houses are generally about the childhood dream of a specific place to go with your buddies away from bullies or parents and making it real.
One of the more important considerations will be the tree or trees that will be used as the base or support for the structure. It is also important to make sure it is a strong healthy tree that is seated firmly in the soil. Some perfect choices are fir, maple, apple and oak. Making a bad choice now could cause many more issues to come up later on in the process from possible damage or wasted money.
As lame as it sounds you should also talk to your local planning department. Sometimes there are special permits that you have to get to build on your property so you do not get fined. It is also a good idea to speak with any neighbors that may be affected to get their input and just to let them know what you plan to do. A few kind words can often go a long way to preventing issues later on.
It is generally never a good idea to just throw something together. First sit down and pencil out a detailed drawing as precise you can for what you are building. By drawing it down on paper you often get a general idea of what it looks like when it is completed. Now is generally the best time to make any adjustments so it will fit in with what you are planning to build.
Come up with a good plan for supporting it. There are many different methods to use. The post method uses posts cemented into the ground. The bolt method uses lag-bolts screwed directly into the tree to hold the floor joists. The suspension method uses steel cables from strong branches to stabilize it.
Decide on what way you plan to access it. This may be a rope, a stairs, a ladder or different combinations of these. The critical thing is that it will be safe and secure so nobody gets hurt. This is typically the one place where accidents often happen so be safe.
Now that all the difficult stuff is out of the way, the fun stuff begins. Start building your dream getaway. Take your time and do it right the first time. Remember in many cases this is not just for you but there is a good chance your children will love spending time in it as well.
You really do not need to spend massive amounts of capital on construction. Try to allow for ample room around any trunks so your trees will continue growing. This will make them much stronger and also adds years to the usable lifetime of many custom tree houses.
