It is a basic fact that many people love to grow their own vegetable garden. There are few things like planting some seeds in the dirt and months later reaping the many rewards of your difficult labor. In many colder climates people are beginning to rediscover the many benefits of building greenhouses to basically prolong their growing season. Understanding the various construction techniques used for building geodesic dome greenhouse kits can be advantageous if you try raising a vegetable garden this way.

After deciding to build one generally the next question is about how do I do it and what materials are used. There is no real simple answer to those questions. There are many different ways people have worked out that range from very inexpensive materials that go up in a day's time to more expensive materials that take longer. There are even prefabricated models that you can buy on the net that have everything cut and marked for you.

Some people like the inexpensive flattened conduit method. It is probably the easiest. You flatten out the ends of metal tubing you buy at the store. Then you drill a hole at both ends for a bolt to go through and bend it just a little. After construction it is generally covered with light weight plastic. Domes like this can generally go up in under a day.

Some like the tube and hub method. With this one instead of bolting all the flattened pipes together, a larger pipe is used with holes drilled in it. The studs are then bolted to it instead of each other. It is then covered with light weight plastic. This generally is a little stronger while still being inexpensive.

Some people like using the beam and hub plan. This is slightly more complex and more expensive because it has specially cut angled beams and hubs which are fastened together to form the framework for a dome. Permanent domes are typically constructed this way.

One of the more high priced ways to try is the framed paneled timber method. This method is generally the way many prefab companies will ship to people that can be found on the internet. They use pre-cut wood timbers that are constructed to link together smoothly along the sides. They will generally have outside materials attached as a means to reinforce them for strength as well.

One of the most durable and longest lasting kind is the monolithic dome. They will typically outlive most houses they are built beside. They are typically built with several different layers of cement heavily sprayed over balloon forms. They are also sprayed with a polyurethane foam inside them to act as waterproofing and as thermal insulation. After everything dries out they are fitted for the windows and doors.

You do not have to use just one technique for building a geodesic dome greenhouse. By understanding how each form is used there is the possibility of combining a little from each to make something that works for you. Remember that they are not just for greenhouses, they make great sun rooms to hang out in as well.
