Setting Up A Koi Pond

By Roland Stockwell

Installing a koi pond is an amazing way to enhance the beauty of your property, whether it is a private home or commercial location. There is much to consider and plan prior to installing this special water feature, from the pond size to the number of fish, so consider the following suggestions prior to creating your pond.

Deciding the size of your pond is a good first step. You also need to sketch out a design that is simple and deep enough to give your fish room to swim and exercise. Typically, you don't want a pond that is smaller than about 1,200 gallons. Smaller ponds are more easily affected by changes in temperature, so a larger pond will provide a bit more consistency. You also need to consider the size and number of fish you wish to put in the pond. Each fish will require a certain amount of gallons of water in order to keep the oxygen levels stable. Too many fish means too little oxygen, which means your fish will get sick and die.

Your filtration system choice is also a big part of building a koi pond. This system filters and circulates the water, helping to keep it clean and stable for your fish. Make sure that the system you choose can easily accommodate the amount of water in your pond and remove the waste that your fish will produce. It is a good idea to do a lot of research prior to creating your pond and talk with a fish expert when choosing your materials and filtration systems.

Once you have your pond up, running and filled with happy fish, you need to think about keeping them happy and safe in clean water. You might think the maintenance is constant, but there are products available that can make keeping the water clean fairly easy. For instance the AquaLily by Healthy Ponds and the AquaSpherePro are two simple-to-use products that also are chemical free.

AquaLily is not only a helpful item, it is also attractive. It is a lily pad-shaped dispenser that holds a specially formulated mix of beneficial bacteria. This bacteria goes to work as soon as it hits the water, keeping everything sparkling and clean. Each lily dispenser will work for a month, and then you just add a new bacteria package to the AquaLily. One lily dispenser will treat about 2,500 gallons of water.

The AquaSpherePRO works much the same way, releasing a similar mix of helpful bacteria into the water. This product is simply a biodegradable sphere that you place in the water and it immediately begins working. At the end of 30 days, it will have dissolved in the pond, and you just add a new sphere. There are many different sizes available, from spheres for 1,000 gallons to 12,500 gallons. Both the AquaSphere and AquaLily have been approved by veterinarians and are safe for fish and all other wildlife.
