Watching the fish play in the water or wondering just how they recognize you when you come to feed them is almost magical, especially if it is in the confines of your own space. They are very adaptable creatures with the ability to adjust to varying climates, making them perfect for water features even in areas with cold winters. At a minimum, a pool for fish should hold around 1100 gallons of water, which translates into an area that is eight feet by six feet that is one yard deep. This will sustain about five medium-sized fish. Larger fish or an increased number will require a larger area. Keep this in mind when deciding where to install your new water feature.

A filtration system is also needed to remove dirt, debris, and even pathogens. This requires both biological and mechanical filters. A drain on the bottom is also a good idea, especially if the pond is large. This make changing the water much easier versus bailing and making multiple trips to remove water.

The water in the pool must be maintained with chemicals to ensure a proper pH balance as well as ammonia and nitrate levels. Increases or decreases can indicate problems, either with the number of fish or their health. This could also indicate a malfunctioning filtration system.

Koi are susceptible to predators, including cats, raccoons, foxes, and large birds. It is important to have some security in place such as netting or fencing to repel such threats. This is also a good idea if there are small children who could wander into the vicinity. Netting can be installed that is functional but not a deterrent to the view.

A man made water feature is an asset to your property when properly designed and maintained. When looking for a contractor, make sure they have suitable references and previous work that you can visit to view their handiwork.
